Our Subject Leaders at New Horizons Primary School are passionate about leading their subjects well.  Here are their subject intents:

English

It is our intent to ensure we promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping children with a strong command of the spoken and written word.  Our intent will enable children to write independently and creatively for a variety of audiences and purposes across the curriculum.

Maths

It is our intent that every child develops a deep, long term understanding of Maths, equipping them with the skills of calculation, reasoning and problem solving that they need in life beyond school. We intend to provide a balance of acquisition, consolidation and application over time.

Computing

It is our intent that the Computing element of the curriculum will help pupils become digitally literate by gaining the technical knowledge and computational thinking skills to be active participants in a digital world.  Our intent will enable children to become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of technology.  This is highly important in an age where children have access to the internet and need to know how to stay safe online.

Design and Technology

It is our intent that the Design and Technology element of our curriculum will increase pupil’s awareness of the world around them through design.  Our children will develop as independent problem solvers within a curriculum that will inspire their curiosity and creativity.

Physical Education

It is our intent that the PE element of the curriculum will help pupils to create a positive relationship with physical activity for life.  We want to develop healthy lifestyles, children eating a balanced diet, positive growth mind set and resilience.  This will be embedded through the curriculum which aims to improve agility, balance and co-ordination.  As well as teaching children how to cooperate and collaborate with each other.

Art

It is our intent that the Art element of the curriculum will engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  As pupils progress, we want them to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Art and Design.  They will know how Art and Design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Music

It is our intent that the Music element of the curriculum will help pupils gain an understanding of music through listening, singing, performing, evaluating, analysing and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.

History

It is our intent that the History element of the curriculum will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world.  To inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.  This includes learning about the history of Portsmouth and visiting local historical sites to help enrich the curriculum and support children’s understanding.

Geography

It is our intent to inspire children’s curiosity about the unique local area of Portsmouth and create a fascination for the wider world.  The Geography curriculum aims to teach children about diverse places, people, nature, and human environments; creating a deep understanding of the Earth’s key processes.

PSHE

It is our intent to prepare young learners to be safe, healthy, responsible and empathetic members of the community.  We aim to embed dispositions to support our children in becoming successful learners through developing reciprocity, resilience,  resourcefulness, reflectiveness and responsibility.

Science

Our Science intent is currently under development as we embark on an exciting year of funded development towards a science accreditation.

French

It is our intent that the languages element of the curriculum will help foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.  The French curriculum aims to ensure all children understand and respond to language from a variety of sources and are beginning to speak with increasing confidence and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
